Dr. Niu is an environmental scientist who received his PhD degree in Environmental Science from Tohoku University, Japan. He has extensive experience in environmental microbial treatment technology and has developed innovative solutions for organic waste management through the integration of fundamental science and applied engineering. Dr. Niu has published around 80 fully refereed journal papers, 10 invention patents, and has edited a monograph and three English book chapters on carbon-neutral renewable energy. He has received numerous national and international awards, including the International Water Association's IWA agro best presentation and the AT3E best presentation. Dr. Niu is also named as one of the World's Top 2% Scientists 2020 by Mendeley data and an Advanced Individual of Industry-University-Research Collaboration in China. Currently, he serves as the Deputy Director of the China-America Cooperative Research Center for Environment & Health in Shandong Province.
Dr. Qigui Niu's research interests cover a broad range of topics in environmental science. Specifically, his research focuses on high solid organic waste anaerobic fermentation, bio-augmentation technology for treating livestock waste, and biohythane and biogas production from agricultural waste. He is also interested in developing innovative technologies to enhance bioenergy recovery. In addition, he studies biological nutrient removal and recovery, with a focus on the development of anammox-based processes for removing and recovering nitrogen and phosphorus from low C/N wastewater. Finally, Dr. Niu is interested in microbial community dynamics and regime shifts, and how these dynamics impact environmental processes.
