John SM Leung

Biography:

Dr. John SM Leung is a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon with over five decades of experience in the medical field. He graduated from St. Joseph's College and received a Hong Kong Government Scholarship to study at the University of Hong Kong, where he earned his M.B.,B.S. degree in 1958. He received his FRCS Edinburgh in 1964, studied thoracic and cardiac surgery under Sir Russell Brock (later Lord Brock of Wimbledon) in Brompton Hospital, London and later under Norman Shumway, Stanford University Medical Center, Palo Alto, U.S.A. He also received training as a Fellow in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery with Sir Brian Barrett-Boyes in Green Lane Hospital, New Zealand. He is known for pioneering various surgical techniques and treatment methods, including chemotherapy for lung cancer, cytology study on bronchial aspirate of lung cancer, and bilateral arterial perfusion of head and neck for nasopharyngeal cancer.

After serving as the surgeon in charge of the Cardiothoracic Surgical Division at the University Surgical Unit, he has been in private practice as a visiting consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Paul’s Hospital and Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital since 1977. Dr. Leung has also contributed significantly to medical research and publications, having published papers on discoveries such as the carcinogenic effect of kerosene stoves on lung cancer, and the world's first successful combined aneurysm replacement and anterior spinal fusion for syphilitic aortic aneurysm with spinal erosion. He has presented his research at various conferences, the World Congress in Vascular Surgery, the Scientific Meetings of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Congress of Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology, the Singapore Malaysian Congress of Medicine and the Hong Kong Institute of Allergy Annual Meeting. His current focus is on chemo-sensitivity assays on cancer specimens and immunological modification in anti-cancer treatment.

Research Interests:

Dr. Leung JSM has contributed to the field of cardiology, specifically in the areas of pulmonary medicine and thoracic surgery. His research includes topics such as bronchogenic carcinoma, haemopneumothorax, chemotherapy and target treatment in advanced bronchogenic carcinoma, acute diffuse interstitial fibrosis of the lung, and lung cancer in Hong Kong. He has also published case reports on topics such as pulmonary cryptococcosis, toy fragment causing tracheo-bronchial obstruction, and double tuberculous broncho-oesophageal fistulas in an adult. In addition to his research publications, Dr. Leung JSM has also written letters to the editor on various medical topics in the Hong Kong Medical Journal, raising important issues such as the feasibility of using circulating gut microbiomes for screening of colorectal cancer and the possibility of vertical transmission of COVID-19 in late pregnancy and childbirth.
