Dr. Rainer obtained his MD degree in 1983 from the School of Medicine, Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitat, Mainz, Germany, where he also completed his Doctoral Thesis with highest honors in the same year. He went on to complete his Professorial Thesis ("Habilitation") in 1991 and was appointed Senior Lecturer ("Privatdozent") at Philipps-Universität, Marburg, Germany. Dr. Rainer completed his General Surgery residency at Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitat, Mainz, Germany from 1983 to 1987. He pursued a fellowship in Transplantation Surgery at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota from 1987 to 1989. In addition, he received clinical training in Vascular Surgery at Philipps-Universitat, Marburg, Germany in 1989-1990 and in Living Donor Liver Transplantation at Kyoto University Hospital, Kyoto, Japan in 1996.
Dr. Rainer specializes in surgical and transplant treatments for individuals with end-stage liver, pancreas, kidney, and intestinal failure caused by both benign and malignant conditions. He focuses on pancreas, islet, and kidney transplants to manage diabetes mellitus and its related complications, as well as chronic pancreatitis and islet transplants. His expertise also covers the management of pancreas and liver cancer, risk assessment, and quality control of benign and malignant pancreatic, liver, and intestinal disorders, and tolerance induction through donor-specific cell augmentation.
